Russia vs. Ukraine: Russian missile attack hits Kiev and damages building

The capital of Ukraine, Kiev, was the target of a Russian missile attack in the early hours of Monday (6), local time.

According to authorities, a residential building was hit and residents may be trapped under the rubble of the badly damaged structure.

Reuters witnesses reported a series of explosions in and around the Ukrainian capital. Air defense systems were also in action to intercept Russian drones.

According to Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the affected building is in the historic Podil district, close to the city center.

"People are trapped between the seventh and ninth floors," Klitschko said.

The mayor also reported that drone debris fell on a second residential building in the same region and in other districts of the city, which has around 3 million inhabitants.

The attack comes just days after another large-scale bombing of Kiev. On Thursday, at least 30 people died in the Ukrainian capital after Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles against the city.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Kiev refused to stop bombing in the region to facilitate the transfer of bodies.

On Friday, Russian military commanders informed President Vladimir Putin that Moscow forces had taken control of Kostiantynivka. The Ukrainian government denied the information and highlighted that its troops remain in the city.

Considered strategic in the Russian military campaign in the Donetsk region, Kostiantynivka was the target of a proposed six-hour ceasefire for this Monday (6), according to Moscow, with the aim of facilitating the delivery of the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers.

Russia also stated that it set a deadline of 9 am (GMT) this Sunday for Kiev to respond to the proposal.

Ukraine's Defense Ministry and General Staff did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
