Russia says attacks on Ukraine are response to 'terrorist acts'

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the operation in Ukraine and said it was a response to what it called "terrorist acts" against targets inside Russia.
According to the statement, Russia used hypersonic missiles and drones to attack seven regions of Ukraine, including Kiev, Zaporizhia and Kharkiv, successfully hitting sites useful to the Ukrainian armed forces, such as fuel and transport facilities and military airfields.
"During the night, in response to terrorist acts of the Kiev regime, the armed forces of the Russian Federation carried out a massive attack using high-precision and long-range weapons, based on aircraft, land and sea", he detailed.

Russia launched a large-scale air attack against Ukraine, in the early hours of this Tuesday (2) - Monday night (1st) in Brazil -, according to Ukrainian authorities. Initial reports indicate that 11 people died and another 100 were injured. Rescue teams carry out searches.

Air defense systems were activated to repel the bombings against the capital, Kiev, according to Reuters witnesses. Residents were advised to look for shelters, such as subway stations. During the early hours of this Tuesday (2), new explosions were heard in the capital.
The mayor of Kiev reported that a nine-story residential building caught fire after the Russian attack. Another 24-story residential building was also hit and set on fire in what authorities believe was a missile attack.

Local authorities also said that a multi-story residential building suffered damage and that there were people trapped under the rubble.
Around 140,000 city residents are without power.
In Dnipro, the country's fourth largest city, at least four people died and another 16 were injured, according to local authorities. Ukrainian security forces released a statement stating that Russia launched 73 missiles and 656 drones into the country, hitting 38 targets. To counter the attack, the Ukrainian army used 40 missiles and 602 drones.
Subsequently, the Ilsky oil refinery in the Krasnodar region of Russia caught fire after a drone attack. According to preliminary information, there are no victims. There is also no information about who carried out the attack.

Last week, Russia warned that it intended to launch "systematic attacks" against targets in Kiev linked to the Ukrainian armed forces, as well as decision-making centers, and called on foreigners to leave the country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of opening "a new page" in a "series of crimes" following attacks on a student dormitory in the Luhansk region and a residential building in the Kherson region, areas of Ukraine controlled by Moscow.
"Knowingly committing the most serious crimes against children and teenagers at the teachers' college in Starobilsk, and now in Henichesk, the Kiev leadership decided open a new page in the series of his crimes," Putin said.
A drone attack on the Russian-controlled city of Starobilsk killed 21 people at the end of May. An attack on an apartment building in Henichesk, on Sunday (31), killed a child and injured 11, according to authorities installed by Moscow.
Ukraine denies carrying out the attack.
