Russia recognizes Brazil as an area free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination

Russian health authorities announced this Thursday afternoon (10) the recognition of the entire Brazilian territory as free from foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination. The decision reflects the new Brazilian health "status" conferred by the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) and represents relevant progress for the health and trade agenda between the two countries.

The recognition, which derives from the joint work of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), is the result of Brazil's consistent progress in the area of animal health and attests to confidence in the Brazilian agricultural defense system.

The decision contributes to expanding access conditions for Brazilian products to the Russian market, with emphasis on animal protein chains, and reinforces Brazil's position as a safe, reliable and competitive supplier for international markets.

In the first four months of 2026, Russia imported 40.4 thousand tons of Brazilian beef, generating US$178.8 million. The country ranked 6th among the largest buyers of Brazilian protein in the period.

Brazilian pork exports reached a record of 1.51 million tons, in 2025, with revenue of US$ 3.619 billion for the country, while chicken meat sales totaled 5.324 million tons in 2025, a historic record for the sector.
