Air defense systems were activated to repel attacks on the capital, according to Reuters witnesses. A large column of smoke was seen in the city after the air raid warning.
The mayor of Kiev reported that a nine-story residential building caught fire after the Russian attack. Another 24-story residential building was also hit and burned in what authorities believe was a missile attack.
Local authorities also said that a multi-story residential building suffered damage and that people were trapped under the rubble.
Initial reports indicate that at least two people were injured. Parts of the city are without electricity.
The report is being updated.

Russian drone crosses airspace of Ukraine and hits building in Romania
Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of opening "a new page" in a series of crimes after attacks on a student dormitory in the Luhansk region and on a residential building in the Kherson region, areas of Ukraine controlled by Moscow.
"Knowingly committing the most serious crimes against children and adolescents at the teachers' college in Starobilsk, and now in Henichesk, the Kiev leadership decided to open a new page in the series of its crimes," he said Putin.
A drone attack on the Russian-controlled city of Starobilsk killed 21 people in late May. An attack on an apartment building in Henichesk, on Sunday (31), killed one child and injured 11, according to authorities installed in Moscow.
