Russia criticizes US pressure on Cuba: "It cannot be tolerated"

The Kremlin stated this Thursday (21) that it does not approve of the pressure that the United States is exerting on Cuba and that violence should not be used against heads of state under any circumstances.

The United States on Wednesday announced murder charges against former President Raúl Castro, escalating the U.S. pressure campaign against Cuba.

The formal accusation against Castro refers to a 1996 case, when two civilian aircraft belonging to the Cuban-American exile organization Brothers to the Rescue were shot down.

"We believe that the pressure exerted on Cuba cannot be tolerated," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by RIA Novosti.

"We believe that under no circumstances should such methods - methods of violence - be used against former heads of state or current heads of state," Peskov added. "We do not approve of this."

The formal accusation against Raúl Castro raised fears of a United States military operation in Cuba, similar to the one carried out in Venezuela to arrest dictator Nicolás Maduro. Maduro is currently detained in New York on drug trafficking charges.

US President Donald Trump has already threatened military action, saying in March that Cuba "will fall very soon." Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, has also publicly stated that he would like to see regime change in the country.
