Rubio hints at new developments with Iran: "There could be news today"

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested on Saturday (23) that there could soon be important announcements about the war with Iran, saying during a working visit to India that there could be news today.

"There might be news later today. I don't have any news for you right now, but there might be some news a little later today. There might not be. I hope there will be, but I'm not sure yet," Rubio said.

The secretary added that diplomatic efforts continue to take place behind the scenes and that the United States remains focused on ensuring that Iran cannot possess a nuclear weapon and on dealing with its stockpiles of enriched uranium.

"Even as I speak to you now, there is some work being done," Rubio said. "There's a chance that, whether it's later today, tomorrow or in a few days, we might have something to say."

Rubio reiterated the Trump administration's position that Iran "can never have a nuclear weapon," while emphasizing that Trump prefers a negotiated solution rather than military escalation.

"The president's preference is always to resolve problems like this through a negotiated diplomatic solution," Rubio said. "That's what we're working on now, but this problem will be resolved, as the president has made clear, one way or another."

Rubio also repeated the demands that the American government has been making of Tehran, including opening the Strait of Hormuz "without charging fees" and handing over its stocks of enriched uranium.

"The strait needs to be opened without tariffs. They need to hand over their enriched uranium, they need to hand over their highly enriched uranium," Rubio said. "We need to address the issue of enrichment."
