Rolex worn by Drake on the cover of "Take Care" sells for R$2.5 million
The legendary Rolex GMT-Master II watch plated in gold and diamonds, immortalized by Drake on the cover of the acclaimed album Take Care (2011), was sold for the record price of US$500,000 (about R$2.5 million).
The desired collector's item was for sale by the renowned specialized watchmaker Wind Vintage, in Palm Beach, Florida.
Sale coincides with triple launch
As soon as it went on sale, the collector's item received four immediate proposals as soon as it was announced, being sold for the original price - an amount five times higher than the market average for the same factory model.
The million-dollar transaction takes place amidst a moment of strong turbulence in the career of the Canadian rapper, who in the early hours of May 15 surprised the music industry by releasing three simultaneous albums - "Iceman", "Habibti" and "Maid of Honour".
The combo of 43 new tracks works as a blunt artistic response to the recent public clash with rapper Kendrick Lamar.
Cultural value
In addition to its aesthetic appeal and cultural weight, the piece sold carries an exclusive engraving on the back with the owl logo, symbol of Drake's record label and label, OVO.
For experts, the astronomical value of the sale is justified by the relevance of the album Take Care, considered one of the pillars of the "emo rap" subgenre.
Released in November 2011 and produced by names such as Noah "40" Shebib and Boi-1da, the work debuted at the top of the Billboard 200, where it remained for six consecutive weeks, scoring global hits such as "Headlines" and the title track recorded in partnership with Rihanna.
