Robot surgery: Brazilian doctor in China operates on patient in RS

A telesurgery was performed last Wednesday (20) to remove the gallbladder of a 47-year-old patient, in Porto Alegre (RS). The procedure was conducted by doctor Noberto Martins, who was more than 18 thousand kilometers away, in the city of Wuhan, China.

The surgery took place at Hospital Mãe de Deus, located in the Center-South region of Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul. "While I operated from China, Guilherme Pesce provided full support to the patient at Hospital Mãe de Deus, together with the team that monitored the procedure in real time", explained the doctor.

The Chinese robot Tomai made it possible to carry out the procedure. According to Noberto Martins, telesurgery was part of the scientific program of the 10th Chinese Congress of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Robotic Surgery and Artificial Intelligence.

"The procedure performed was a cholecystectomy, that is, the removal of the gallbladder of a 47-year-old patient. The surgery was successful and reinforces the role of telesurgery on a global scale", added Guilherme Pesce, a doctor who assisted with the procedure in Brazil.

"Being able to share our experience at an international congress of this relevance, connecting China and Brazil in real time, is something very significant for Brazilian robotic telesurgery", concluded Noberto Martins.
