Robert De Niro Reveals the Greatest Italian Films of All Time - "This is Simply Terrible!" Unmissable List for Film Fans!

Robert De Niro, the iconic actor of Italian origin, opened his heart and revealed his personal list of the greatest Italian films of all time! During a visit to the Criterion Closet, the star of classics such as Taxi Driver, The Godfather and Goodfellas selected gems from Italian cinema that marked his life and career. Despite facing controversy when trying to obtain Italian citizenship in 2004 (because of gangster roles), De Niro has a deep connection to the country of his ancestors. He highlighted Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958), Mario Monicelli's comedy about a group of inept criminals trying to rob a pawn shop. "It was many years ago, but it was just terrific," De Niro said enthusiastically. Next, Mafioso (1962), by Alberto Lattuada, starring Alberto Sordi - a film that directly influenced the mafia roles that De Niro immortalized. "That was also terrific," he added, revealing that he and Martin Scorsese even discussed a remake! The film mixes black comedy and realism, paving the way for the modern gangster genre. Another highlight is Divorce Italian Style (1961), by Pietro Germi, with Marcello Mastroianni. A sharp black comedy about a man who plans to get rid of his unhappy wife (divorce was illegal at the time) to be with his teenage cousin. The film won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and De Niro was full of praise: "Yeah, this was a terrific movie. Terrific." Finally, Blow-Up (1966), by Michelangelo Antonioni (Italian-British co-production in English). A classic about art, reality and illusion in Swinging London in the 60s. "It was a more popular film, an 'art film' that people actually watched. It was terrific," said the actor. These films show De Niro's undying love for Italy and quality cinema.
