RJ: Police target extortion scheme against traders to buy flour
Civil police officers in Rio de Janeiro launched, this Wednesday (3), an operation that targets a criminal group responsible for monopolizing the food supply and extorting traders in areas under the influence of organized crime.
Investigations revealed that the group used intimidation, coercion and territorial control to force traders to buy products, mainly flour and bread, only from suppliers linked to the militia and a criminal faction.
The action was carried out by Draco (Department for the Repression of Organized Criminal Actions and Special Inquiries) to execute search and seizure warrants at addresses located in the West and North zones of the capital.
Victims were forced to buy goods in large quantities, often more than was necessary, at prices above those common on the market. Purchases took place under constant threats of retaliation, financial loss and even closure of establishments.

The focus of the scheme, according to the police, was the extortion of small and medium-sized traders, who became hostages of the organization to keep their businesses running. The crimes occurred especially in Baixada Fluminense and the West Zone of Rio.
The investigations identified the existence of a company used to hide the illegality of activities, enabling the distribution of goods and financial transactions in the scheme.
It was also pointed out that the economic exploitation carried out by the criminal group is part of a strategy of territorial dominance. Organizations linked to the militia and drug trafficking strengthen their economic power and control through influence over trade in the region.
The operation seeks to seize documents, accounting records, electronic devices and other elements that could further the investigation.
The investigations are ongoing to identify everyone involved, measure the entire financial movement of the scheme and understand possible connections with other crimes.
