The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Calaviere (PSD), announced, this Thursday (28), the extension of the end of the use of cash for payment on buses in the city of Rio de Janeiro to June 28. From that date onwards, customers will only be able to pay for tickets via Pix, credit and debit cards, in addition to single tickets.

Previously, the deadline was May 30th.

The legality of the measure was recognized by the Judge of the Court of Justice José Roberto Portugal Compasso, who recognized that the change in charging is related to the modernization of the public service payment system.

In a press conference, the mayor stated that the decision was "consensual" and that it represents security for passengers and collectors. For him, using this new measure, it will be possible to have access to data that improves mobility in the city, in addition to identifying where the majority of customers are.

The measure, announced by the city hall on the 14th, was approved by the 2nd Public Finance Court of the District of the Capital and the municipal administration began the testing phase on the same day.

The transition will take place from Saturday (30), when cash will still be accepted, but all payment methods will now be available on bus fleets.
