Rio records coldest dawn of the year after advance of polar air mass
Rio de Janeiro recorded, this Saturday (6), the coldest dawn in 2026. According to data from Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology), thermometers registered 12.5°C at the Vila Militar station, in the west zone of the capital of Rio de Janeiro, surpassing the previous record of 12.9°C, recorded on May 12.
The mark was observed during a morning of intense cold that hit part of the Center-South of the country. According to Climatempo, the combination between a mass of cold air of polar origin and the reduction in cloud cover favored a more pronounced drop in temperatures.
In addition to Rio de Janeiro, other capitals also recorded cold records in 2026. In Belo Horizonte (MG), the temperature reached 8.8°C. In Vitória (ES), thermometers registered 14.8°C, while Goiânia (GO) recorded 11.3°C.
According to the meteorological agency, the phenomenon is the result of the action of a mass of polar air over the ocean and the so-called radiative loss process. With few clouds at night, the heat accumulated on the Earth's surface escapes more easily into the atmosphere, causing more intense cooling in the early hours of the morning.
The cold was also felt in mountainous regions of the Southeast. In Serra da Mantiqueira, on the border between São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, temperatures were close to 2°C. In elevated areas of the south of Minas Gerais, there were conditions for the formation of occasional frosts.
Forecast for the next few days
The trend, however, is for a gradual increase in temperatures in Rio throughout the week. According to Inmet's forecast, the minimum expected for this Sunday (7) is 15°C, with a maximum of 27°C. On Monday (8), thermometers should vary between 14°C and 28°C.
From Tuesday (9), warming intensifies. The maximum can reach 31°C, while the minimum rises to 16°C. On Wednesday (10), the forecast is for temperatures between 17°C and 30°C.

On Thursday (11), the advance of areas of instability should increase the cloudiness over the capital of Rio de Janeiro. Inmet predicts clouds with isolated rain, with a minimum of 19°C and a maximum of 26°C.
Despite the gradual rise in temperatures during the afternoons, the early mornings and mornings are expected to remain mild over the next few days, especially in areas further from the coast and in higher altitude regions of the state.
