Rio buses stop accepting cash; see how to pay the ticket

Passengers on municipal buses in Rio de Janeiro can no longer pay their fares in cash from this Sunday (28). The change is part of the implementation of the Jaé ticketing system and also changes the rules for accessing the BUC (Bilhete Único Carioca) and BUM (Bilhete Único Margaridas) fare integrations.

With the new rule, payment for tickets can be made using the Jaé card, through the system application or via Pix directly at the validators installed in the buses. Payment by Pix is available across the entire fleet, but only allows single trips, without the right to integration benefits.

Another change is that the separate card (green) is no longer accepted for tariff integrations. The card will continue to be valid for paying for individual trips and top-ups, but the BUC and BUM benefits will now be exclusive to users of the Jaé app or the black card linked to the CPF.

Since the changes were announced on May 12, more than 200,000 people have joined the Jaé system, according to data released by Rio City Hall. Payment via Pix has also been used by passengers and has already exceeded 345,000 boardings in about a month of operation.

To serve users during the transition, Jaé's service network was expanded and has around 1,600 service points, including newsstands, accredited establishments, ticket offices and self-service machines installed in VLT, BRT and metro stations, between Jardim Oceânico and Botafogo.

The advice for passengers who still use the green card to make integrations is to register in the Jaé system via the app or at one of the service points.
