Retail sector discusses impacts of the end of 6×1

Retail businesspeople met to discuss the global economic scenario and the challenges for the growth of the sector in Brazil. Among the main themes of the meeting was the proposal that foresees the end of the 6×1 work schedule, currently being processed in the National Congress.

The measure replaces the model of six days of work for one day of rest with a 5×2 day, with two days off per week. For sector representatives, the change could increase operational costs and affect company performance.

According to Abrasce (Brazilian Association of Shopping Centers), the end of the 6×1 scale could cause a reduction of more than 12% in sales and the number of jobs, an impact similar to that observed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the entity's president, Glauco Humai, the sector earned R$200 billion in 2025, but this amount would have been around R$14 billion lower if the new rule had been in force since the beginning of the year.

In the entity's assessment, small retailers would be the most affected. They represent around 60% of the 115 thousand establishments installed in shopping centers in the country.

According to Humai, companies with four or five employees would need to hire at least one more worker to work the new shift, which could increase labor costs by up to 25%, a percentage considered unfeasible for most of these businesses.
