Resident of Sinop Dies in Drone Attack in the Ukrainian War After Fulfilling His Dream of Fighting in the Conflict

Sinop resident Fernando Pereira Lisboa, 40, died during a drone strike in the Zaporizhzhya region in southeastern Ukraine while taking part in the conflict between Ukrainian and Russian forces. The confirmation of his death generated great commotion among family, friends and residents of the city of Mato Grosso, who followed the Brazilian's journey to the European country. Fernando had been in Ukraine since March of this year and worked alongside the Ukrainian army. In a post on social media, Fernando's sister paid an emotional tribute to the Brazilian. "I just found out that my brother on my father's side went to fight in the war in Ukraine and was shot down. He died fighting for a cause he believed in. I never imagined my blood fighting in a war. You fulfilled your mission. Go with God", he wrote. A resident of the Maria Carolina neighborhood, Fernando was single and lived with his mother before leaving for Europe. Friends and family describe him as a sweet person, easy to get along with and passionate about topics related to the military universe. According to his family, the motivation that took him to Ukraine was not related to financial issues. Fernando believed in the cause he defended and wanted to help a country at war. "He was always passionate about war and wanted to fight for a nation that needed him," said his sister. According to family members, Fernando's entire trip and stay in Ukraine were paid for by the Ukrainian government itself. Due to the logistical difficulties caused by the conflict, the body will not be transferred to Brazil. The responsible authorities informed that the Brazilian will be cremated and buried in Ukrainian territory. The decision was communicated to the family, who are facing mourning from a distance. After the repercussion of the case, relatives also warned about possible virtual scams. According to them, there is no fundraising campaign, online crowdfunding or request for donations in the name of Fernando or his family. The death of the Sinop resident occurs amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
