Research reveals 21.5% drop in vaccination after Covid-19 pandemic

A survey conducted by Instituto Ideia, at the request of the Sou Ciência study center at Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo), showed that adherence to the vaccination program fell after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The study data revealed that there was a 21.5% drop in the number of people who searched for immunizations in the comparison between July 2023 and March 2026.

The research "Memory, justice and reparation for the Covid-19 pandemic and current adherence to vaccines" was conducted between February and March 2026 through 1,500 telephone interviews with men and women aged 16 or over, residing in Brazil, with different characteristics of gender, income, age, education, social class, region, race/color and religion. The data has a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.

In relation to the total, almost 30% of Brazilians are outside the standard of full adherence to vaccines. Of those who fall into this segment of the population, 9.9% say they do not get vaccinated, 9.2% abandoned immunization after the pandemic and 8.8% did not know how to respond.

When comparing age groups, it was possible to identify that the elderly are seeking vaccines more than young people. 78% of people over 60 years of age reported to the survey that they are within the vaccination program considered ideal.

The demographic study also showed that there are important regional differences: the Southeast has 77.2% adherence, compared to 62.5% in the North.

Dengue
Regarding the dengue vaccine, 70% of respondents had a positive response to the vaccine, but only 56.7% intend to get vaccinated immediately. 13.7% reported that they consider it important, but do not make vaccination against the disease a priority at the moment.

Still, there were groups that responded that they view the vaccine with indifference (10.5%), uncertainty (8.1%), lack of interest (6.7%) or openly declare themselves anti-vaccine (4.8%).

62% of elderly people intend to take the dengue vaccine immediately - compared to 46% of young people.
