Research points to crime and trafficking as Brazil's biggest problem

Crime and drug trafficking are identified as Brazil's main problem by 66.8% of the population, according to the May edition of the Latam Pulse survey, carried out by AtlasIntel in partnership with Bloomberg.

The topic was mentioned by around two out of every three Brazilians in the survey. In second place is corruption, mentioned by 57.9% of those interviewed. Economy and inflation appear next, with 22.5%.

In the survey, released n, respondents were able to choose up to three options to answer the question about what, in their opinion, are the main problems currently facing the country.

According to AtlasIntel, the perception of crime and drug trafficking increased by 3.9 percentage points compared to the previous survey. The company attributes this movement, among other factors, to the debate on classifying criminal factions as terrorist organizations, which increased the visibility of the issue in the country.

Concern about corruption grew by 2.8 percentage points and reached 57.9%, amid the progress of investigations involving Banco Master and the investigation related to Senator Jaques Wagner.

After the economy and inflation, the most cited problems were extremism and political polarization (15.5%), the state of education (14.4%), violence against women and feminicide (14.4%), the weakening of democracy (12.8%), the health situation (12.6%) and poor functioning of the justice system (12.5%).

At the bottom of the survey appear police violence (2.5%), change in traditional values (0.5%), roads, ports and airports (0.3%) and migration and border control (0.2%).

The survey interviewed 4,999 Brazilian adults between the 26th and 30th of June. The margin of error is one percentage point, with a 95% confidence level.
