Registration of old cars in SP grows 56% in the first half of the year

The demand for registration of collector vehicles in the state of São Paulo registered an increase of 56% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period of the previous year. According to data released by Detran-SP, more than 7,500 prior authorizations were issued between January and June this year, compared to around 4,800 in the first six months of 2025.

With this advance, São Paulo's fleet of collectible cars reached the mark of 82,005 units, which represents an increase of approximately 8% compared to the beginning of 2026.

The significant growth is seen as a direct reflection of the digitalization of the sector. In February 2026, Detran-SP launched an exclusive page on its official portal aimed at owners of classic cars. The new digital space was developed to centralize and make the process of regularizing these cars more agile, directly helping collectors and new owners.

The platform brings together services such as issuing historical certificates, procedures for obtaining the traditional black license plate and guidance for updating old yellow license plates - which are no longer in the agency's database and can lead to the removal of the vehicle if it is driven without regularization, the process of which costs R$ 469.91 and already includes licensing.

In addition to ensuring the authenticity of the car, the black plate adds market value and, in a certain way, an elevated status to the model, but there are specific rules for a car to be officially classified as a collector and be able to display the plate. The vehicle must be at least 30 years old and maintain its original factory characteristics.

In addition, the owner must present the Collectible Vehicle Certificate (CVCOL) issued by accredited entities, the Vehicle Safety Certificate (CSV), bear the costs of administrative fees and be linked to a collectors club.
