Record negative temperature of the year is recorded in Santa Catarina

A new negative temperature record was recorded in Santa Catarina (SC), in Bom Jardim da Serra, which reached -5.6°C in the early hours of this Thursday (21).

A mass of cold air related to stable weather and low cloud cover resulted in a cold morning not only locally, but in several regions of the state.

Throughout the day, temperatures began to rise, due to the presence of the Sun and the predominance of dry air. In the afternoon, temperatures of up to 21 °C were recorded on the coast and up to 14 °C in other regions of Santa Catarina.

The state's Civil Defense stated that there should be no significant changes in temperature until the end of the day nor any risk of rain in SC, despite the roughness of the sea, recorded by the institution.

It is also warned that, on Friday (22), temperatures will also dawn, with minimum temperatures below 10 °C in most regions. The weekend continues with cold weather, but with rain mainly on the coast.

Civil Defense reinforces in a statement about the intense temperatures that, due to the cold, the occurrences of thermal discomfort increase, with episodes of hypothermia and cardiorespiratory diseases. Therefore, wearing appropriate clothing, keeping environments warm, paying attention to children, the elderly, homeless people and pets is essential.

In addition, it is also recommended to avoid activities at sea and double your water consumption. The population is also requested to follow weather warnings and updates on the official channels of Santa Catarina State Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense.
