Ranking chooses the most sustainable higher education institutions in the world

The Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) is the most sustainable higher education institution in South America, according to the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings ranking, released this Tuesday (23).

UFMG also appears as the second institution with the greatest impact in the entire Latin American and Caribbean region.

THE Sustainability Impact Ratings is the Times Higher Education (THE) sustainability impact rating. The ranking measures the performance of higher education institutions in actions related to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Globally, UFMG occupies the 201-300 range. Among the UN's 17 SDGs, the institution is the best placed Brazilian out of eight:

- No poverty (SDG 1)
- Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6)
- Clean and affordable energy (SDG 7)
- Decent work and economic growth (SDG 8)
- Industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9)
- Responsible consumption and production (SDG 12)
- Climate action (SDG 13)
- Peace, Justice and Institutions Effective (SDG 16)

In this year's edition, THE Sustainability Impact Ratings evaluated 1,646 universities from 116 countries and territories.

The University of Manchester, in the United Kingdom, is ranked first overall, followed by Griffith University, in Australia. The Philippines has the highest number of universities in the ranking: 160.
