The move took place in the 44th minute. After a dispute on the left side of the Portuguese attack, players from both teams got involved in an early riot. Amidst the pushing and shoving between the athletes, Rafael Leão got excited and threw a punch at Iván Román, who fell to the lawn.
The referee stopped the match and handed out red cards to both players. Rafael Leão was expelled for the aggression, while Román also received the red card for participating in the confusion that preceded the coup.
With the expulsions, Portugal and Chile continued the match with ten players on each side. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw.
