The PT (Workers' Party), an acronym of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, assesses that the new tariffs announced by the United States on Brazil created an opportunity to impose political strain beyond the left on the senator and opponent of the Planalto, Flávio Bolsonaro (PL).

For PT leaders, the combination between the Bolsonaro family's rapprochement with the ideological wing of Donald Trump's government and measures that affect Brazilian interests offers the party greater potential to reach more workers and sectors of the business community.

The reading is that issues linked to national sovereignty tend to produce less resistance among voters from different ideological spectrums than debates centered on judicial or institutional issues involving the Bolsonaro family.

For this reason, the orientation has been to treat the episode not just as a dispute between government and opposition, but as a conflict between national interests and external pressure.

Behind the scenes, PT members believe that the American stance allows them to reposition a discourse traditionally associated with the left - that of defending sovereignty - in a broader economic context, connecting the discussion to jobs, investments and the defense of the PIX.

The assessment is that the speech can dialogue with segments that normally do not respond so well to the party's traditional rhetoric.
