PT prepares new letter to evangelicals before elections

The PT (Workers' Party) is preparing a new letter to the evangelical electorate. The text was prepared at an event at the party's headquarters, in Brasília, and will be released this Monday (8).

The political charter will address the defense of democracy, national sovereignty, social justice and the appreciation of life. The approach to this last topic is calibrated. Guidelines on abortion, for example, are not a consensus among evangelicals.

During the meeting, members present admitted that there is resistance within churches to the party and the possibility of re-election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The PT member scores below the average among the electorate, according to voting intention surveys.

Another focus of the meeting, therefore, was to outline strategies to reach evangelicals in the 2026 elections.

Gutierrez Barbosa, coordinator of the PT's interreligious sector and organizer of the meeting, told CNN Brasil that the party will continue to adopt as a guideline "not to use the altar to ask for votes".

"Even internal surveys show this: voters reject anyone who links religion to politics," he said.

Among the strategies to be adopted for 2026 are the increase of a network of evangelical digital influencers, the reinforcement of dialogue with "medium churches" and the strengthening of a "broad evangelical front". In the latter, the idea is to have pastors and faithful affiliated with other parties or even without a party.

The event was attended by, in addition to the first lady, Janja Lula da Silva, and the party's president, Edinho Silva, senator Eliziane Gama (PT-MA), federal deputy Benedita da Silva (PT-RJ), councilor Aava Santiago (PSB), federal deputy Marina Silva (Rede-SP), among others.
