The PT bench in the Senate announced this Wednesday (8) the choice of senator Camilo Santana (PT-CE) as the group's new leader. The party made the decision official, debated since last week, after a meeting of party members this morning.

The new leader is a former Minister of Education and will replace Senator Teresa Leitão (PT-PE), who assumed leadership of the government in the Senate. Since resuming his mandate as senator, at the beginning of April, Camilo occupied the vice-leadership of the bench.

Elected in 2022, he is halfway through his eight-year term and will not be a candidate in this year's elections. Availability for the role played a role in choosing his name. He must now act both in the Senate and in the campaign in his state.

As CNN Brasil showed, in Ceará, Camilo should also continue as the main coordinator of the re-election campaign of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Governor Elmano Freitas (PT).

Camilo held the Education portfolio from 2023 until April this year.

Before, he was governor of Ceará for two terms. Now, it will be up to the senator to articulate and guide the bench's position in votes in committees and in the plenary. This year, the government has a series of priority agendas that still depend on approval from the Senate, such as the end of the 6×1 work schedule.

To assume leadership of the bench, senator Beto Faro (PT-PA) was also one of those listed. He is also vice-leader of the party, but was already leader of the party in 2024.
