PT Catholics publish letter criticizing turning church into platform

A group of Catholics affiliated with the PT (Workers' Party) published an open letter criticizing "parliamentary conduct that turns churches into platforms".

In the same vein, they claim that these congressmen "betray the mandate received from the people" when they act against "social, labor and democratic rights".

According to those responsible, the publication is the result of debates that took place during the 1st National Meeting of Catholic Women and Men of the PT, last Tuesday (30).

Despite its religious origin, the group defends the secularity of the State and full religious freedom. "We defend the secular State, religious freedom and respect for different traditions and non-belief, rejecting all forms of intolerance, discrimination and religious racism", says the text of the letter.

The document states that the organization's political project is guided by its commitment to democracy, the appreciation of work, the guarantee of rights and the promotion of a dignified life.

In excerpts from the published letter, there is recognition of social programs, such as Bolsa Família and Minha Casa Minha Vida, as advances in improving the well-being of the population, but they reaffirm the need to approve the end of the 6×1 scale and the zero fare for public transport in their support.

As CNN Brasil reported, the party avoided dealing with sensitive topics for more conservative segments of religious groups, such as support for legal abortion.

In early June, the PT published a similar letter aimed at evangelical voters. At the time, one of the main criticisms was also the use of faith for electoral purposes.
