Prohibited in Brazil, use of PMMA by doctors should result in 2-year imprisonment

Doctors who apply PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) to patients may be sentenced to 6 months to 2 years in prison if they violate the ban on the use of the substance in Brazil. The information was revealed by the CFM (Federal Council of Medicine), this Monday (1st).

The ban on the use of the substance by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) was commented on in a press conference attended by CNN Brasil.

According to Resolution No. 2,461/2026, which will be published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) on Tuesday (2), medical professionals who fail to comply with the order may be condemned for legal practice of medicine.

Graziela Bonin, federal advisor to CFM, warned about the risks of injecting PMMA into the body, considering its "mutilating" effects on the body.

From allergic reactions to granulomas, the introduction of the substance into muscles can cause a strong inflammatory reaction due to its permanent presence in the tissues. Furthermore, patients can develop air embolism and even die.

The president of the CFM, José Hiran da Silva Gallo, pointed out that the use will only be permitted for cases of lipodystrophy in patients with HIV, with prior authorization from regulatory bodies, and carried out in high complexity units accredited by the SUS (Unified Health System), in accordance with the clinical protocols and therapeutic guidelines of the Ministry of Health.

It is worth mentioning that PMMA has been banned in France since 2005, in the Netherlands since 2015 and in Argentina since 2022.

According to José Hiran, the expectation is that the sale of the product will be prohibited throughout the territory beyond its use in medicine.
