Producer of "Run!" sees hope for cinema in "Backrooms" and "Obsession"

"Get Out" producer Jason Blum said the success of the new horror films "Backrooms" and "Obsession" brings hope to cinema.

During the opening of the Produced By Conference, a forum that brings together professionals from the film industry organized by the PGA (Producers Guild of America), in California, he stated that the films are "bold, strange and completely crazy", and that they connect with young people of the new generation in "an incredible way".

According to information from The Hollywood Reporter, Blum also highlighted that, since the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2020, "there is a feeling of lethargy in cinema", which may question the relevance of the industry today. The producer said it's amazing that both films were made by "non-traditional" directors who honed their creative skills online."

The director of "Backrooms" is 20-year-old Kane Parsons, who produced a web series on YouTube on the same theme in 2019, while he was still in high school.

"Obsession" is directed by Curry Barker, 26, who made comedy sketches at the beginning of his career and also went viral on YouTube through short films.

James Wan, creator of the "Conjuring" franchise and who also opened the Produced By Conference alongside Jason Blum, shared that horror films continue to "save our industry."

"I've been a horror fan since I was a kid, and naturally I grew up watching horror movies constantly during the '80s and '90s, inspired by great filmmakers like John Carpenter (Halloween) and Wes Craven (Scream). I watch them and think, 'You know what? I kind of want to do what they did.' Today, we kind of imitate that model. And here we are," said Wan.

Jason Blum and James Wan own the most important production companies in the horror genre in cinema: Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. In 2024, the companies concluded a merger agreement, in which several titles began to receive the creative autonomy and identity of both producers.

Wan and Blum have since said they plan to "adapt to the audience" and refuse to "settle." The aspiration for the future is to create "the Disney of horror".
