A possible provisional peace agreement between the United States and Iran could be signed in the coming days, according to an analysis by International Relations professor Danny Zahreddine, to WW.

For him, the mutual economic pressure between the two countries created a favorable condition for both sides to seek a way out of the conflict.

Zahreddine highlighted that, this time, there is a new element that differentiates the current moment from previous statements about a possible understanding.

"The public position of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, saying that they did not come as close as they did now", was pointed out by the professor as a relevant sign of progress in the negotiations.

Economic pressures from both sides
The professor explained that the pressure imposed by the Americans on Iranian ports, preventing Iran from exporting oil through the Persian Gulf, combined with the pressures that the United States itself faces due to oil and fertilizer prices, created a scenario in which both sides are interested in resolving the impasse.

According to Zahreddine, the terms of the agreement had been ready for more than two weeks, and the question was just the timing chosen by the Americans to announce it as a political victory.

Internal divisions in the Iranian government
Zahreddine also drew attention to internal tensions in the Iranian government.

On one side, the hardest line, linked to the Revolutionary Guard, opposes any agreement it considers unfavorable, preferring a stance of total confrontation.

On the other, a more moderate and reformist wing, represented by Araghchi himself, sees the protocol of understanding as a reasonable victory.

This internal division represents one of the main challenges for concluding the agreement.

Despite the cautious optimism, the professor highlighted that American President Donald Trump has already stated, almost 40 times since April, that an agreement was about to be signed.

For this reason, Zahreddine concluded that it is necessary to wait until the following week for a more precise assessment of the real possibility of a definitive understanding between the two countries.
