President of Mexico calls for moderation in drinking if team beats England

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, asked this Friday (3) that fans avoid excessive alcohol consumption and stay away from overcrowded places if Mexico beats England in the round of 16 match of the World Cup, scheduled for Sunday (5).

During his daily press conference in Morelia, Sheinbaum stated that fans should celebrate responsibly and look for another location if the meeting point is already full.

"We need to avoid excessive alcohol consumption, because whenever there is excessive drinking during these celebrations, problems can arise," said Sheinbaum, adding that episodes of violence are often related to excessive alcohol consumption.

According to authorities, at least four people died in Mexico City during celebrations of the 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the previous phase.

The deaths occurred near Paseo de la Reforma, one of the capital's main avenues, where around a million people gathered to celebrate the classification.

According to authorities, three of the victims in the capital, a 44-year-old man and two women, aged 19 and 48, died of asphyxiation after being crushed by the crowd.

Sheinbaum stated that both fans and authorities have a responsibility to ensure that celebrations take place safely. She also highlighted that several large screens were installed, especially in Mexico City, where the largest concentrations of audiences occurred.
