President of Bolivia reduces his own salary by 50% amid protests

Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz announced this Monday (25) that he will reduce his own salary by 50%.

In a formal ceremony in Sucre, Paz announced that his ministers will also reduce their salaries by half, as a way of demonstrating their "commitment to the country".

The pay cuts come amid the fourth week of political and social unrest in Bolivia.

The protests have caused supply chain problems in the cities of La Paz and El Alto, where shortages of food, fuel and medicine are affecting markets, hospitals and gas stations.

Protesters' demands include increased wages, opposition to reforms announced by the government and protests against fuel shortages and poor quality.

The problem with gasoline supply, which has been ongoing since the previous government, remains unresolved.
