Pre-Columbian archaeological piece is recovered by the PF in Rio

The Federal Police recovered, this Monday (25), an archaeological piece belonging to pre-Columbian cultures, during an operation in Rio de Janeiro, last Friday night (22).

The Pre-Colombian Operation sought to recover the piece improperly auctioned in 2020, in a virtual auction promoted by a specialized company based in Rio.

The police officers who took part in the action carried out a search and seizure warrant in an apartment in Rio, where the widow of a deceased diplomat who had purchased the piece at auction resides.

According to the PF, the investigation began with a crime report presented by Iphan (Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage).

The institute had reported the identification of archaeological pieces belonging to pre-Columbian cultures in Hispanic America in the catalog of a virtual auction.
