The possibility of the pope meeting abuse survivors has been the subject of media reports in recent days.
According to the AFP agency, the Spanish Episcopal Conference and the government of Spain approved a reparations program months before the planned visit of Pope Leo XIV.
The program gives victims one year to apply and, so far, according to the agency, 420 people have already done so. The program gives the government the final say on payments.
A 2023 report from Spain's Ombudsman for Human Rights estimated that there were hundreds of thousands of victims of clergy abuse in that country over decades, echoing similar scandals that have rocked the Church in many parts of the world.
