Pope Leo XIV regrets war in Ukraine and calls for an end to the conflict

Pope Leo XIV lamented on Wednesday (17) the ongoing war in Ukraine, inviting everyone to pray for an end to the conflict.

"There are many innocent victims, rescuers dead and churches and cultural heritage sites devastated by the flames," the pontiff said during his weekly audience in St. Peter's Square, while also calling for more dialogue.

Leão also welcomed the interim agreement between the United States and Iran to end the regional war in the Middle East, as an "encouraging result of the patient work of dialogue and negotiation."

The pope, who drew the ire of US President Donald Trump after criticizing the war with Iran, said he hoped the deal could help "strengthen mutual trust, security and stability".
