Poll: what has been the biggest surprise of the World Cup so far?

The first round of the 2026 World Cup ended with some of the biggest teams on the planet finding it more difficult than expected. In a World Cup marked by balance, several teams considered favorites left points along the way against theoretically inferior opponents.

The main example was the 1-1 draw between Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Houston. Pointed out as candidates for the title, the Portuguese opened the scoring early, but saw the Congolese react in the first half to win the first point in their history in World Cups.

Other zebras also moved the round. Saudi Arabia snatched a draw against Uruguay, Cape Verde held Spain 0-0, Egypt stopped Belgium and New Zealand sought equality against Iran in the final minutes.
