Police invade opposition party headquarters in Turkey
Riot police officers invaded the headquarters of Turkey's main opposition party, in Ankara, this Sunday (24).
Supporters of Özgür Özel, leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP, social democrat), had been trying to block access to the building since the morning. But, in the early afternoon, the agents managed to break through the barricade using tear gas.
Videos show that clouds of gas spread inside the Republican People's Party (CHP) building, while those present shouted and threw objects at the entrance, at the moment the police managed to enter the building.

On Thursday (21), a Turkish court removed CHP leader Ozgur Ozel, alleging irregularities, and reinstated the party's former president, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who lost to President Tayyip Erdogan in the 2024 national elections, from office.
This Sunday, the governor of Ankara ordered the eviction of everyone inside from the party headquarters.

Shortly before the police managed to enter the building, Ozel posted a video on social media saying that he would not leave the place and that he would resist:
"Now the police are here. They want to enter the building with pepper spray and batons. They want to destroy this building. We are not leaving here. I don't know how long we can resist."
There was also a clash between supporters of Ozel and Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who regains control of the party.

Last year, the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, the CHP's most popular figure, was arrested on corruption charges and arrested on the same day he was nominated as a candidate for the next presidential elections, scheduled for 2028.
