Police investigate fire that hit around 60 homes in Paraisópolis

The Civil Police of São Paulo are investigating the possible causes of the large fire in the community of Paraisópolis, in the south zone of the capital of São Paulo, this Thursday morning (18)

The episode affected around 60 homes and dozens of families. Despite the great destruction, no casualties were reported.

According to the SSP-SP (Public Security Secretariat), the expert was called in and will carry out work on site to identify the causes of what happened. The case was registered as a fire in the 89th DP (Jardim Taboão).

At around 5:30 am this Thursday (18), 35 firefighters were called to the incident recorded on Rua do Símbolo, in Paraisópolis.

According to the Fire Department, during the work, a soldier was hit by a roof, but only suffered bruises and is fine.

According to the bodies working at the scene, the flames are close to being controlled.

Erika do Couto Santos is a cleaning assistant at CEU (Unified Educational Center) Paraisópolis, close to the accident site. In addition to his residence, another 49 houses were engulfed in fire, according to preliminary information from the Fire Department.

The cleaning assistant says, emotionally, that she lived on rent for two years in that same house and, in the last few months, managed to buy it. "It was a dream come true. Even though it was made of wood, it was my home", he said.

The woman says she woke up around 5:20 am to the sound of flames. "I immediately opened my bedroom window and saw the flash," he said.

The first thing he thought of was waking up his two daughters under 15, wrapping them up and shouting to the neighbors that it was on fire. In less than an hour, around 6am, the fire had already reached major proportions, as Erika reports.
