Police in Spain and the Netherlands seize almost a ton of ecstasy that was going to South America

Police in Spain and the Netherlands seized 947kg of the synthetic drug MDMA, better known as ecstasy, which was destined for South America, in what was the largest seizure of this psychotropic drug in the history of Europe, Spanish authorities reported this Tuesday (7). crimes against public health, participation in a criminal organization, fraud in the consumption of electricity and illegal possession of weapons.
The alleged traffickers were preparing to send the synthetic drug hidden inside a crane, which would be transported from the Belgian port of Antwerp to Ghana, police said.
In Ghana, ecstasy - which is said to provide prolonged euphoric effects with mild hallucinogenic properties - would be exchanged for cocaine, which would then be sent to Europe by through Spanish ports. The ecstasy would then be shipped to South America.
Investigations, which began in early 2025, revealed that the suspects were coordinating shipments from Spain and the Netherlands to Africa and, from there, to Latin America.
The joint operations took place in late January 2026, once it was confirmed that the shipment was imminent.
Police also seized 644 cannabis plants, three firearms, 46 thousand euros (around R$ 271.4 thousand) and five luxury watches.
