Plastic surgery: what don't they tell you about before and after? See with Dr. Kalil
The relationship between plastic surgeon and patient goes far beyond the moment of the operation. In a debate with Dr. Roberto Kalil on CNN Sinais Vitais, which will air this Saturday (30), at 7:30 pm, plastic surgeons Marcelo Sampaio, president of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, and Luciana Pepino, highlighted the importance of aligning expectations, combining procedures and strictly following post-operative recommendations to ensure lasting results.
According to Sampaio, one of the most common mistakes in clinical practice is for doctors to assume what is bothering the patient without listening properly.
"How many times does a patient come in front of you and you notice a slightly bigger nose and suddenly she says she wants to have her eyelid operated on, which is what bothers her, because she is happy with her nose", he exemplified. For him, the secret is to listen not only to the complaint, but also to where the patient wants to go.
Surgery and minimally invasive procedures complement each other
Sampaio reinforced that minimally invasive procedures and plastic surgeries are not competitors - they add up. In cases of more effective facial rejuvenation, for example, surgery may be necessary to remove excess skin and reposition deep structures.
In situations where the patient's expectations are more modest, less invasive technologies may be sufficient.
The specialist added that, even after facial surgery, certain wrinkles may require supplementation with botulinum toxin or filler. "Minimally invasive procedures add to the final result of an aesthetic procedure. They do not compete, they are complementary", he concluded.
Post-operative care: care that defines the result
Luciana Pepino warned that failure to comply with medical recommendations in the post-operative period could completely compromise the outcome of a surgery. In the immediate period, ignoring simple guidelines - such as avoiding sudden movements - can lead to scar dehiscence, that is, the opening of the surgical wound.
"The patient can destroy an entire result if she doesn't follow the doctor's recommendations post-operatively, that's a fact", he said.
In the long term, weight gain is one of the main factors that compromise results. Pepino cited breast lifting as an example: if the patient gains weight after the procedure, the result of the lifting may be lost. The same goes for liposuction - without changing eating habits, the effect of the surgery disappears.
The specialist also highlighted that an inadequate diet, with excess sugar, wheat and refined flour, harms long-term healing. Therefore, these guidelines must be passed on to the patient even before carrying out the procedure.
