Planalto sees an adverse situation and predicts a scenario similar to that of 2025 in case of new US tariffs

The Palácio do Planalto already assesses that the internal political impact will be strong given the proposal by the Office of the American Trade Representative to apply a 25% tariff on Brazilian exports.
The order in the Executive Branch is to hold negotiations, but there is recognition that the situation is adverse.
If this new tariff is confirmed next month by the Donald Trump administration, the perception is that this will internally recreate an environment similar to the tariff announced in July last year.
Also because the investigation into unfair commercial practices began within the same context of political sanctions on Brazil, in July 2025, with the scenario of the trial of former president Jair Bolsonaro for an attempted coup d'état.
On the other hand, fearing negative electoral consequences, the senator and PL presidential candidate, Flávio Bolsonaro (RJ), made a preventive statement this Tuesday morning (2), stating that he asked Donald Trump, president of the United States, to did not tax Brazilian companies.

"In the three meetings we had, with President Trump, Vice President [J.D.] Vance and Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, I expressly asked: not to tax Brazilian companies. It is a request that I made, expressly, to them", said Flávio Bolsonaro in an interview with Rádio Itatiaia, from Minas General.
Among Flávio's allies, there is also concern about electoral wear and tear with a possible new tariff, as the Bolsonaro family articulated and defended the Trump administration's measure last year.
At the time, there was political pressure from former deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro in favor of retaliation to try to reverse the trial against his father, Jair Bolsonaro.
At the time, the 50% tariff was a political decision by the American government, even though Brazil had a deficit in trade with the United States. There was a strong reaction here, especially from the productive sector, in an act of unity of the country against American action.
Technical and diplomatic reaction, argues Planalto
Regarding the accusations of unfair commercial practices, the American arguments were all refuted by the Lula government, including on topics such as PIX, environmental preservation, piracy and in relation to fines applied to large platforms.
The order at Palácio do Planalto is to negotiate until July and make a technical and diplomatic reaction. It will repeat the script that worked last year.
Care is taken to avoid a more warlike speech on the part of President Lula himself, to avoid a response that is out of diplomatic tone.
"Brazilian companies and jobs are threatened with new tariffs. Therefore, the response has to be technical, showing the injustice of a possible American decision", observed a direct assistant to President Lula.
