PIX will be protected, safeguarded and is not up for debate, says Finance Minister
Publicidade

The Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, stated this Tuesday (2) that the PIX, the Central Bank's real-time transfer instrument, will be protected and safeguarded. "It's not up for debate," he added.
This means that the Brazilian government is not willing to negotiate the terms of PIX - contested by the United States, which accuses the BC of favoring the payment system to the detriment of American companies operating in the sector.
According to the American government, the BC acts simultaneously as a regulator and operator of the system, which would favor PIX and limit the actions of competitors.
The criticisms are part of the justification for the proposed 25% tariff on Brazilian products following a trade investigation by the US Office of Trade (USTR) against abusive practices.
According to the agency, the Brazilian government adopts practices that "encumber or restrict" trade with North Americans.
When the investigation was opened, in July 2025, PIX was not directly cited. The document made reference to "digital commerce and electronic payment services", including those offered by the Brazilian State. In practice, the PIX is the only public system for this purpose.
Defense of the PIX
Other authorities also came out in defense of the PIX, such as the Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce, Marcio Elias Rosa, and the vice-president of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin, who came out in defense of the Brazilian payment system. negotiation, there is no chance for that. And we will always be able to demonstrate that I do not meet the budget of the Brazilian people, which is the line of clarification and defense of Brazil", said Marcio Elias Rosa.
Alckmin declared that Brazil receives criticism from the United States with indignation, and that the proposal regarding the PIX is unfair. "PIX is a national heritage, an achievement of the people, technology at the service of society, economy, at no cost to the population," he said.
Record in 2025
Data from the Central Bank show that PIX handled R$35.36 trillion in transfers last year, a new record.
There was an increase of 33.6% compared to 2024 - when transactions totaled R$26.46 trillion.
The number of transactions also exceeded that recorded in the previous year. In 2025, there were 79.8 billion operations. In 2024, the Central Bank accounted for 63.5 billion transfers.
In November 2025, when PIX celebrated its five-year anniversary, the director of Organization of the Financial System and Resolution of the Central Bank, Renato Gomes, commented that the country was close, at that moment, to having the entire adult population using the tool.
"It is essentially almost every adult in the country", said the director of the BC, at the time.
He also stated that the speed of adoption The massive adoption of PIX by the Brazilian people was surprising, and that the tool was responsible for including thousands of people in the financial system.
"The government is very transparent and will never allow any topic dear to national sovereignty, such as the PIX, for example, to remain at the negotiation table and not be in the negotiation, there is no chance for that. And we will always be able to demonstrate that I do not pay attention to the North American government's budget of the Brazilian people, which is the line of clarification and defense of Brazil", said Marcio Elias Rosa.
