Philosopher Edgar Morin dies at 104; Brazilian researchers regret

French philosopher Edgar Morin died at the age of 104. There is still no confirmation of the place or cause of death, the announcement took place this Friday (29). Several thinkers around the world mourned the death of the intellectual who was also an anthropologist and sociologist.

"With deep respect and gratitude, we mourn the passing of Edgar Morin, a universal thinker, master of complexity and humanist guide for our academic community. His work will endure in every effort to reconnect knowledge, understand the human condition and think about the world from an integrative perspective", states the note from Multiversidad Mundo Real Edgar Morin, an international institution based in Mexico that disseminates the researcher's knowledge.

Morin was born in Paris, in 1921, and would turn 105 years old on July 8th. Author of more than 30 books, the thinker published the book "The Seven Necessary Knowledge for the Education of the Future" in partnership with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

"He even crossed the century he was given to live like a comet. He was a philosopher, sociologist, participated in the French resistance during the Second World War, fighting Nazism, and, throughout his intellectual and political trajectory, he also became a firm critic of Stalinism and all authoritarian forms of power. He dedicated his life to combating one of the greatest illusions of modernity: the idea that the world can be understood in isolated parts", excerpt from the historian's tribute and anthropologist, Lilia Schwarcz.

Professor Edgar Morin served in the active French Resistance of the Second World War against the Nazis who were on French territory. The teacher adopted the name Morin after living in hiding, his real surname is Nahoum.

"Friends, with great sadness, we announce the passing of our dear friend, master and honorary president, Edgar Morin", laments the Edgar Morin Study and Research Center based in Brazil.

Professors at the University of São Paulo also lamented the death of the global intellectual reference. "It's very sad news!! An important reference in my academic life", says Pedro Jacobi, professor at the (IEE) Institute of Energy and Environment at Usp.
