The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, took a stand against the suspension of the Dosimetry Law, which provides for the reduction of sentences for those convicted of the acts of January 8, 2023.

In his opinion, Gonet argued that the law approved by the National Congress is in accordance with constitutional principles.

According to Gonet, Congress has the autonomy to define criminal policy and punishment criteria, which is why, in the assessment of the PGR (Attorney General's Office), there is no unconstitutionality in the text of the law.

Demonstration within the scope of actions at the STF
The PGR demonstration occurs in the context of four actions presented to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) by left-wing parties, all reported by Alexandre de Moraes.

The request for this manifestation is considered standard in the process, and Moraes was awaiting the PGR's position to schedule the trial and make a final decision on the constitutionality of the law.

The position of the PGR differs, however, from that of the AGU (Attorney General's Office), which had already spoken out against the Dosimetry Law, even calling for its immediate suspension.

History of the law and its scope
The Dosimetry Law changes the criminal execution law, making the rules of progression and reduction of sentences more flexible for those convicted of the undemocratic acts of January 8th.

The rule could even benefit former president Jair Bolsonaro. In the requests presented by left-wing parties to the STF, this was exactly one of the central arguments: that the law would benefit people already convicted by the courts, including Bolsonaro.

It is worth remembering that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) fully vetoed the project approved by the National Congress in January. The veto was later overturned by Congress and the law was promulgated by Davi Alcolumbre. Alexandre de Moraes suspended the execution of the law until the conclusion of the trial in the court's plenary.
