PF and Navy intercept boat with drugs in Suriname waters

The PF (Federal Police) and the Brazilian Navy seized a load of drugs on a fishing vessel boarded in international waters, off the coast of Suriname, the smallest country in South America, during a joint operation carried out this Tuesday (7).

The action is part of an investigation into international drug trafficking and was supported by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration), the United States anti-drug agency, and JIATF-South (Joint Interagency Task Force South), a task force linked to the Southern Command of the United States Armed Forces (United States Southern Command).

According to the PF, the operation was made possible through the sharing of intelligence information between the agencies.

The approach was carried out by PF and Navy teams embarked on a patrol ship based in Belém, Pará, subordinate to the Command of the 4th Naval District.

During the inspection, agents found narcotics on board the vessel. The quantity of drugs seized has not yet been disclosed and will be announced after completion of the checking and weighing procedures.

The vessel and crew went through the procedures set out in Brazilian legislation and international cooperation agreements applicable to the case.

According to the PF, investigations continue to identify others involved in the international drug trafficking scheme and clarify the circumstances of the incident.
