Pedestrian dies after being run over by police vehicle during chase in SP

A man died this Friday (12) after being run over by a PM (Military Police) vehicle in the Jardim São Savério neighborhood, in the south zone of São Paulo. The victim was a pedestrian who was passing by during a police chase.

According to the SSP-SP (São Paulo Public Security Secretariat), two military police officers were in a vehicle following a motorcycle involved in a robbery, when the vehicle's front tire burst. The driver lost control of the steering wheel, hitting two vehicles.

According to information from the police, one of the cars, which was parked, was thrown forward and hit two pedestrians who were passing by. One of the victims, a 59-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries and died, while the second victim remained under medical care.

The two police officers who were in the vehicle suffered injuries and were taken to Hospital das Clínicas, where they remain hospitalized, with non-life threatening injuries.

Expert examinations were requested from the IC (Institute of Criminalistics) and the IML (Legal Medical Institute) and the case was registered as culpable bodily injury while driving a vehicle, theft inside a vehicle and culpable homicide while driving a vehicle by the 26th Police District (Sacomã).

In a statement, the SSP lamented the death of the pedestrian and informed that the incident will also be investigated through an IPM (Military Police Inquiry).
