PCC and CV: Temer says US classification does not affect Brazil's sovereignty

Former president Michel Temer (MDB) told journalists that he does not believe that the classification of the PCC (Primeiro Comando da Capital) and the CV (Comando Vermelho) as terrorist organizations, by the United States, affects Brazil's national sovereignty.

The statement was made during Temer's departure from the opening table of the Lisbon Forum, an event organized by the minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) Gilmar Mendes, this Monday (1). Even though he disagrees with the thesis that the measure could threaten sovereignty, the former president admits a reservation in the case of interference in internal issues.

"I don't think it affects [Brazil's sovereignty]. When there is a decree of this nature, obviously this will be discussed, talked about and taken forward with the Brazilian authorities. What cannot be allowed is exactly and precisely a direct intervention in Brazil's internal issues."

What Temer defined as the "ideal of ideals" would be "that our country's public security agencies make immediate contact with US security agencies to work together."

Because the organizations' activities extend beyond the national territory, the veteran politician argues that collaboration could extend to even more countries. "The issue of organized crime has become internationalized, it is not just an issue for our country. So, it is possible that several countries may be interested."

The US State Department classified the two factions as "Specially Designated Global Terrorists" last Thursday (28). According to a department spokeswoman, faction activities were detected in 12 states in the United States.

While the measure was celebrated by the opposition, the Palácio do Planalto released a note that demonstrated concern about the country's national sovereignty and financial independence.
