Parreira remains hospitalized in serious condition and with the aid of equipment

Former Brazilian national team coach Carlos Alberto Parreira remains hospitalized in serious condition in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of Hospital Samaritano da Barra da Tijuca, in Rio de Janeiro, the hospital's press office said this Sunday (5).

Last Friday (3), Parreira developed a pulmonary infection with repercussions on kidney function. According to the medical report, the former coach needed to be sedated again and began breathing again with the help of machines. The pulmonary complication also caused the need for hemodialysis.

At the moment, despite being serious, he is stable and dependent on intensive support. Parreira's follow-up is carried out by an intensive care pulmonologist, in addition to the hospital's multidisciplinary care team.

Parreira and Hodgkin's lymphoma
Parreira has Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer that begins in the lymphatic system, a group made up of organs and tissues that produce the cells responsible for immunity and vessels that carry cells through the body.

The characteristic of the disease is that it spreads in an orderly manner, from one group of lymph nodes to another. Expansion occurs through lymphatic vessels. The disease arises when a lymphocyte (the body's defense cell), usually type B, transforms into a malignant cell, which is capable of multiplying and spreading.

Thus, the malignant cell starts to produce, in the lymph nodes, identical copies, which can also be called clones. These cells can also travel to other nearby tissues over time, and if left untreated, reach other regions of the body.

Men tend to be more prone to the disease than women. And it tends to originate more frequently in the neck and chest region.
