Former Brazilian national team coach Carlos Alberto Parreira remains hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hospital Samaritano Barra, in Rio de Janeiro. According to a medical bulletin released this Monday (6), his clinical condition remains unchanged.


According to the hospital, Parreira remains in a serious but stable condition and remains dependent on intensive support.


The former coach has been hospitalized since June 16 with a diagnosis of lung inflammation. Last Friday (3), he developed a pulmonary infection with repercussions on kidney function.

Because of the complication, Parreira had to be sedated again, started breathing with the help of machines and began hemodialysis treatment.


"The patient presented with a pulmonary infection with repercussions on renal function. Due to this complication, Parreira was once again sedated and breathing with the aid of equipment, in addition to requiring hemodialysis.", informed the hospital.


Parreira is accompanied by intensive care pulmonologist Arthur Vianna, in addition to the unit's multidisciplinary care team.

The former coach also treats Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system.

Parreira has Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer that begins in the lymphatic system, a group made up of organs and tissues that produce the cells responsible for immunity and vessels that carry cells through the body.


The characteristic of the disease is that it spreads in an orderly manner, from one group of lymph nodes to another. Expansion occurs through lymphatic vessels. The disease arises when a lymphocyte (the body's defense cell), usually type B, transforms into a malignant cell, which is capable of multiplying and spreading.


Thus, the malignant cell starts to produce, in the lymph nodes, identical copies, which can also be called clones. These cells can also travel to other nearby tissues over time, and if left untreated, reach other regions of the body.


Men tend to be more prone to the disease than women. And it tends to originate more frequently in the neck and chest region.
