Pakistan PM thanks Trump for efforts 'to seek peace'

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Trump on his "extraordinary efforts to seek peace" on Saturday night (23), but did not mention any specific agreement or the Strait of Hormuz.

Instead, Sharif cited a "very useful and productive telephone conversation" that Trump had with leaders of several Gulf countries: Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Pakistan, represented by the country's military chief, Asim Munir.

"The discussions provided a valuable opportunity to exchange views on the current regional situation and how to advance ongoing peace efforts," Sharif added.

Islamabad has been a key mediator in negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Earlier Saturday evening, Trump said a peace deal with Iran had been "largely negotiated" and final details were expected to be announced "soon."

In a post on the social network Truth Social, the American president stated that he spoke with Gulf leaders, together with Pakistan, mediator of the negotiations, about the war against Iran and a "Memorandum of Understanding on Peace".

According to Trump, the opening of the Strait of Hormuz was among the elements of the agreement.

In response, Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency said the US president's claims were false, adding that the Strait of Hormuz would remain under Iranian administration.
