The Rio de Janeiro court sentenced former military police officer Orlando Oliveira de Araújo, known as Orlando Curicica, to more than 35 years in prison for the murder of Wagner Raphael de Souza and the attempted murder of a woman.

The decision of the III Jury Court of the Capital, made after trial this Wednesday (20), comes after the Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro reported crimes in June 2015, in Curicica, West Zone of Rio.

On that occasion, the victims were shot inside a car by suspects who were in another vehicle, ordered by Orlando.

During the trial, the Sentencing Council fully accepted the theses presented by the 1st Public Prosecutor's Office at the III Jury Court of the Capital, recognizing the authorship of the crimes, in addition to the qualifiers of bad motive and the resource that made it difficult for the victims to defend themselves.

Investigations indicate that the crime was motivated by a disagreement related to the rental of land, allegedly carried out without authorization from Orlando, identified in the records as a criminal leader in the region. The attack, according to the MPRJ, was premeditated and carried out by surprise, with no possibility of reaction from the victims.

The sentence highlighted the planning of the criminal action, the violence used and the defendant's status as mastermind, in addition to considering his criminal record as negative.

Orlando Curicica is also named as head of a militia in Rio and was unduly involved in the death of councilwoman and left-wing activist, Marielle Franco.

CNN Brasil tries to locate Orlando's defense. The space remains open for demonstrations.
