OpenAI is planning the biggest overhaul of ChatGPT to date, with the aim of turning it into a "superapp", integrating coding tools and AI agents to increase revenue ahead of a possible stock market listing, the Financial Times reported on Sunday (7).

The changes are part of a broader reorganization at OpenAI as the company reallocates resources to serve more profitable enterprise customers and intensifies competition with rival Anthropic, the report said, citing more than a dozen current and former employees.

Reuters was unable to immediately verify the published information. OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

The revamp will bring greater prominence and more features to OpenAI's coding product, Codex, and is expected to roll out in the coming weeks, initially through updates to ChatGPT's website and mobile apps, the FT said.

To drive uptake, OpenAI is redesigning the ChatGPT interface with new prompts and features that direct users to coding tools, imaging and partner services such as Canva and Booking.com, the report added.

The majority of Codex users are paying customers, while 2 million companies represent about 40% of OpenAI's revenue, the FT said, adding that this share will increase to 50% by the end of the year.

ChatGPT serves more than 900 million weekly active users, OpenAI reported earlier this year, adding that it has surpassed 50 million consumer subscribers.

Reuters reported in May that OpenAI was preparing a confidential IPO filing in the United States in the coming weeks. However, Chief Executive Sam Altman said the company is not focused on timing and will go public when it makes sense.
